There are Jamaican vacations where you spend six days doing absolutely nothing.
Then there are vacations where you somehow manage to eat jerk, chase sunsets, dance until late, sail the Caribbean, fly through the trees, ride ATVs and still find time to lie on the beach.
This was the second kind.
Our home base was Hyatt Zilara Rose Hall in Montego Bay, an adults-only, all-inclusive resort sitting right on the Caribbean. With its beach, pools, restaurants, bars and endless opportunities to do absolutely nothing, it was the perfect launchpad for a week that turned out to be anything but boring. (Hyatt)
Day One: Jerk, Then Chill
The first day was about getting into island mode.
We grabbed some jerk and then did what you’re supposed to do when you arrive in Jamaica: absolutely nothing productive.
The rest of the day disappeared beside the pool, drink in hand, sun overhead and the
Caribbean doing what the Caribbean does best making you forget what time it is.
And if you’re staying at Zilara, there’s actually a jerk shack right on property. Hyatt’s Barefoot JerkZ serves Jamaican jerk chicken and pork alongside classics like rice and peas. (Hyatt)
Day Two: Pilates, Beach Life & MoBay After Dark
Day two started with Pilates, because apparently vacation calories need to be negotiated. After that? Beach mode.We spent the day lounging by the water, soaking up the sun and enjoying the kind of slow afternoon that makes you question why you don’t live somewhere tropical.
Then came sunset.
Phones came out. Cameras came out. The sky put on its usual Jamaican masterpiece.
But the night was just getting started.
We headed to Margaritaville Montego Bay, where the energy quickly shifted from sunset photography to full-on party mode. The venue sits along Montego Bay’s famous Hip Strip and features live entertainment, dancing, a water park and nightlife. (Margaritaville Caribbean)
And yes the dancing was serious. It seemed like every song came with its own choreography. One minute you’re watching; the next, you’re trying to keep up.
Day Three: Slow Down, Then Step Out
Day three was deliberately slower.
Sometimes the best vacation itinerary is no itinerary at all.
We took our time, relaxed and eventually headed out for
the evening to Pier One.
It was Friday night, and crowded would be an understatement.
Still, there’s something about being surrounded by music, people and that unmistakable Montego Bay nighttime energy that makes the chaos part of the experience.
Day Four: We Took the Party to Sea
By day four, staying on land wasn’t enough. We boarded a catamaran for a day on the Caribbean, complete with food, drinks and opportunities to snorkel. But the best part wasn’t simply the boat ride.
It was the people.
Guests from different resorts came together, strangers became temporary vacation friends, music filled the air and the ocean became the backdrop to one giant floating social.
This is the side of Jamaica that photographs don’t always capture the spontaneous conversations, laughter and random friendships that happen when everyone is on island time.
Day Five: Adventure Mode Activated
Then came Chukka. And let’s just say relaxation was officially cancelled. The day was packed with ziplining, ATV riding and horseback riding. Chukka’s
current Jamaica offerings include all three, along with catamaran and snorkeling experiences at its Ocean Outpost. (Chukka)It was the kind of day that leaves you dirty, tired and smiling.
Then came the KFC.
We had heard the local KFC was something we absolutely had to try. The recommendations were strong. The expectations were high.
The wait?
Two hours.
And after finally getting the food, the verdict was simple: not worth the wait.
Sometimes travel teaches you what to seek out.
Sometimes it teaches you what to skip.
Day Six: Reality Check
And just like that, it was over.
One final breakfast.
One last look around.
Then it was time for the airport.
Six days in Jamaica had somehow delivered everything from poolside laziness to Caribbean nightlife, sunset photography, ocean adventures and adrenaline-fuelled excursions.
The lesson?
Don’t spend your entire Jamaican vacation sitting at the resort.
But also don’t schedule every minute.
Leave some room for the unexpected.
Because sometimes the best memories happen somewhere between the itinerary and the moment you decide to ignore it.
