One Wild Day in Jamaica: ATVs, Zip Lines, Horses and Rum Punch at Chukka

There are vacation days when you wake up, grab breakfast, find a beach chair and make a serious commitment to doing absolutely nothing.

And then there are days in Jamaica when your alarm goes off early because you have places to go, things to ride, horses to mount and, eventually, rum punch to drink.

Our Chukka adventure day was definitely the second kind. The morning began with a 7:40 a.m. shuttle pickup from the resort. We had roughly a 30-minute ride ahead of us, and as the resort disappeared behind us, the anticipation started to build. We were heading to Chukka for a full day of adventure, and our schedule was ambitious: zip lining, ATVs, horseback riding and a catamaran cruise, all before heading back to the resort for dinner. If you’re considering doing several Chukka activities in one day, one lesson became obvious almost immediately: plan ahead.

Get There Early and Book Your Activities

Once we arrived at Chukka, there were a few things we needed to take care of before the fun could begin.

First, I recommend getting a locker.

The on-site lockers are currently listed at US$10, and when you’re spending the day moving between land and water activities, having somewhere secure for your belongings is incredibly useful. (Tripadvisor)

Then came something nobody should be surprised by: the weigh-in.

Chukka has mandatory weight restrictions for several activities, and the limits vary depending on what you’re doing. Its current Ocean Outpost requirements list horseback riding at 230 pounds, ziplining at 265 pounds, snorkeling at 275 pounds and the ATV activity at 400 pounds. (Chukka) So, yes, be prepared to step on that scale.

It’s not about embarrassing anyone. These restrictions are part of the safety requirements for the individual experiences, and knowing them ahead of time can save you from an unpleasant surprise when you arrive. The other important piece of advice? Book your activity times as soon as possible. We wanted to squeeze as much as we could into one day, so we locked in an 11:00 a.m. ATV slot and a 2:00 p.m. catamaran cruise. That schedule gave us enough time to experience several attractions while still getting back to our resort for dinner. And trust me, when you’re dealing with popular activities, you don’t want to discover later that the time you wanted is gone.

Zip Lining: Getting My Husband Off the Ground

One of the day’s adventures was zip lining.

Now, my husband is generally a man who likes his feet where they belong — on the ground.

So watching him take part in a zip-line experience was entertaining all by itself.

Chukka’s Ocean Outpost currently promotes an ocean zipline experience, including a hammock zipline that finishes with a splash into the sea. (Chukka)

For someone who normally prefers solid ground, my husband deserves some credit for giving it a try.

That’s one of the great things about traveling together. You sometimes persuade each other to do things you wouldn’t normally consider, and those moments often become some of your favorite memories.

ATV Time: Jamaica Had Him Ready to Buy One

Then came the 11:00 a.m. ATV adventure, and this was where the day really shifted into high gear. There is something about an ATV that makes you feel like a kid again.you’re not sitting back watching somebody else have the adventure. You’re driving, moving through the terrain and feeling every twist and turn along the way.My husband absolutely enjoyed it.

In fact, he enjoyed it so much that by the end of the experience, he was already entertaining the idea of buying an ATV.

That’s when you know you’ve had a good ride.

One minute you’re on vacation in Jamaica, enjoying somebody else’s equipment, and the next minute you’re mentally figuring out where an ATV would fit at home.

Chukka currently offers ATV experiences at its Jamaican adventure locations, with age, licensing and activity-specific safety requirements applying. (Chukka)

For us, though, the most important requirement was simple: have fun.

And we did.

Horseback Riding  Straight Into the Caribbean

If the ATV experience brought the adrenaline, horseback riding brought a completely different kind of adventure.

This wasn’t simply a leisurely horseback ride along a trail.

Chukka’s signature Horseback Ride ‘N’ Swim takes riders from scenic trails into the Caribbean Sea. (Chukka)

On paper, it sounds almost too perfect: horses, tropical scenery, warm Caribbean water and Jamaica’s coastline.

And then my horse decided to add its own contribution to the experience.

While we were in the water, my horse used the bathroom.

Yes.

In the water.

Let’s just say that was not exactly the Caribbean horseback-riding moment I had pictured in my head.

My portion of the experience ended earlier than planned, but if there’s one thing I’ve learned about travel, it’s that the unexpected moments often become the stories you tell the most.

And this one definitely made the list.

The Bamboo Raft We Left for Another Day

There were still more activities available, including bamboo rafting.

Chukka currently lists its Ocean Bamboo Rafting as an optional add-on for US$10 per person, with reservations and payment handled on arrival at Ocean Outpost. (Chukka)

We decided to skip it.

My husband wasn’t particularly comfortable with the massage and leg-painting elements associated with the experience, so we decided it wasn’t for us.

And that’s perfectly okay.

One of the best parts of an adventure park with multiple activities is that you don’t have to do everything. Pick what makes you comfortable, skip what doesn’t and create your own version of the day.

2:00 p.m. Time for Rum Punch

By 2:00 p.m., it was time to trade engines and horses for the Caribbean Sea.

We boarded the catamaran, and suddenly the energy of the day changed.

The ATV had been about speed. The zip line had been about courage. The horseback ride had been about experiencing Jamaica from the back of a horse.

The catamaran was about relaxing.

There was music, beautiful scenery and unlimited rum punch, creating exactly the kind of atmosphere you want after a morning packed with adventure.

Chukka’s Ocean Outpost currently features a Party Catamaran Cruise among its experiences, alongside the ATV, zipline and horseback options. (Chukka)

Sitting out on the water, looking back toward Jamaica’s coastline and listening to the music, it was easy to understand why the catamaran made such a perfect finale.

Sometimes you don’t need another thrill.

Sometimes you just need a drink in your hand, music playing and the Caribbean stretching out in front of you.

4:30 p.m. — Back to the Resort

By 4:30 p.m., our Chukka adventure was officially over, and we boarded the shuttle back to the resort.

It had been a long day, but the good kind of long  the kind where you’re tired because you’ve actually done something.

We had zipped through the air, ridden ATVs, gone horseback riding in the sea and sailed along the Jamaican coastline.

And somehow, the day still wasn’t finished.

Back at the resort, we freshened up and headed to dinner before making our way to the beach party.

The evening was a completely different kind of fun.

After spending the day with our own little adventure crew, we had the chance to socialize with other travelers, share stories and enjoy the music and atmosphere. That’s one of the underrated pleasures of a resort vacation: you can arrive knowing absolutely nobody and leave with stories about people you met along the way.

The Kind of Jamaica Day You Remember

Our Chukka day wasn’t perfect  and that’s exactly what made it memorable.

There was the early morning shuttle, the locker, the weigh-in and the frantic planning of activity times. There was my husband conquering his reluctance to leave the ground, then falling in love with the ATV experience enough to contemplate buying one.

There was horseback riding in the Caribbean, followed by the unexpected bathroom break that ended my ride early.

There was the bamboo rafting we skipped, because not every activity has to make it onto your vacation checklist.

And then there was the catamaran: music, rum punch and Jamaica’s beautiful coastline providing the perfect exclamation point to a day of adventure.

Chukka’s current Ocean Outpost lineup brings several of these experiences together in one destination, including ATVs, ziplining, horseback riding, catamaran cruising and optional bamboo rafting. (Chukka)

My advice is simple: arrive prepared, check the activity requirements before you go, secure your belongings, book your desired times early and don’t be afraid to skip something that isn’t your style.

Most importantly, leave a little room for the unexpected.

Because sometimes the moments you never planned even a horse deciding to use the Caribbean as its personal bathroom are the moments that turn a vacation into a story worth telling.
