Today, we’re heading out to discover one of Jamaica’s hidden gems Nanny Falls, tucked away in the beautiful parish of Portland.
If you’ve never heard of Nanny Falls before, you’re definitely not alone. Jamaica is blessed with so many breathtaking places that sometimes the most spectacular ones are the places hidden away from the crowds. Nanny Falls is one of those special places.
I’m leaving from Portmore, and the journey to Nanny Falls takes approximately two hours and 55 minutes, covering about 116 kilometres. Now, personally, I love a good long drive. I’m what you would proudly call a passenger princess! Give me a comfortable seat, a good driver, some beautiful scenery outside the window, and I’m good to go.
There’s something special about travelling through Jamaica by road. As you leave the busy streets behind, the landscape begins to change. The sounds of the city slowly disappear, the roads wind through the countryside, and before you know it, you’re surrounded by Jamaica’s natural beauty.
And eventually, you arrive in Moore Town, Portland a place that is not only beautiful but deeply connected to Jamaica’s history.

Before we even get to the waterfall, you have to understand the history of the place you’re visiting.
Moore Town was established between 1739 and 1740, following a peace treaty between the Maroons and the British. This was a significant moment in Jamaica’s history and was closely connected to the legendary Queen Nanny and the Windward Maroons, who fought for freedom, independence and peace.

Getting to Nanny Falls isn’t as simple as pulling your car into a parking lot and stepping out directly beside the water.
And honestly, that’s part of the charm.
You have to put in a little work to experience the reward.
The journey includes a short hike through the beautiful natural surroundings of Moore Town. The walk takes approximately nine minutes uphill, followed by about three minutes downhill before you reach the falls.
You continue walking, and suddenly the trees open up and reveal the waterfall.

There are some places in Jamaica where you arrive and immediately understand why people fall in love with this island.
Nanny Falls is one of those places.
The waterfall is beautifully surrounded by trees, creating a natural canopy overhead. Large rocks surround the area, giving the entire location a peaceful, almost untouched feeling.
Looking around, you might find yourself thinking, “How did nature create something this beautiful?”
It honestly feels like God Himself carved out this little corner of paradise for His people.
There’s something incredibly peaceful about being there.
No traffic.
No city noise.

Let me tell you that water is cold!

One of the things I really appreciate about Nanny Falls is that there are no vendors down there.
And don’t get me wrong Jamaican vendors are part of what makes visiting many attractions so much fun. But sometimes, you just want somewhere where you can disconnect completely.
At Nanny Falls, it can feel like it’s just you and nature.
You can sit quietly.
You can listen to the water.
You can take pictures.
You can have a conversation with friends.
Or you can simply do absolutely nothing.
And honestly, doing nothing in a place like this is doing something.
You’re giving yourself a chance to breathe.
In a world where everybody seems to be rushing somewhere, answering messages, dealing with work, fighting traffic and trying to keep up with everything happening around them, places like Nanny Falls remind us to slow down.
